Finding the right Crew House for you
When looking for a crew house for the first time it is important to know what your needs are. Then you can find a house that matches them accordingly. If you are new to the industry or young, shared housing can be ideal. It offers a great way to find other people with similar interests. The world of yachting and finding a crew job will come with LOTS of questions. You can share ideas, ask questions, and learn a lot if you surround yourself with other crew and people in the business. More importantly, it allows you to find jobs within the yacht industry more easily. What better place is there to hear about upcoming opportunities than from people that are exposed to them everyday? Conversely, a more seasoned yachtie may want more privacy and already have a firm grip as to the goings on in the industry.
Equally as important are the amenities available in the crew house accommodation that you select. If you don't have a car, location is key. You will most likely want to be able to walk, uber, taxi, or bicycle to work or school. If you don't have a bicycle, find a crew house that rents or loans them. If you will be job hunting, find somewhere with good internet and perhaps a printer so you can print your CV. Think about what you will need, then find a crew house that matches those needs.
Lastly, find something that makes you happy. Most crew houses are rented week to week so if you are not happy, grab your bags and relocate. There is no reason to stay somewhere that is dirty, somewhere with broken AC, old filthy bedding, or completely outdated. Find a crew house with accommodations that make you happy. It may never feel quite like home, but the right house with new friends can be an experience you will never forget.
